Rudolf Buchbinder, piano
L.V. Beethoven: Sonate pour piano, op. 2, núm. 3 / Sonate, op. 53, «Waldstein»/ R. Schumann: Études symphoniques, op. 13
In the opinion of the critic Marcel Beaufils, the Symphonic Studies are one of the best of Schumann's works for the piano, and were first performed by the composer's beloved Clara Wieck at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig. Tonight we will hear them in the company of two outstanding sonatas by Beethoven, a consummate master in the process of transformation the genre underwent in the course of the 19th century. While Op. 2 no.3 is a fine example of the Beethoven influenced by the works of Haydn, the Waldstein was a turning point in the piano technique of the period, resulting in a work suitable for performance by only the best artists, such as our guest tonight, the Austrian, Rudolf Buchbinder.
