Some of Brahms' most inspired works are to be found in his output of chamber music – usually profound, meditative compositions eschewing all superficial effect. The trios for violin, cello and piano are among the most important works in the composer's output. The first, written when Brahms was 21, was also his first work for chamber ensemble. This trio and the third are considered to be the best works he composed in the genre.
