PROGRAMME

Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Trio in D Major No. 1, Op. 70, “Ghost” / Josep Maria Guix: Slowly… In Mist, Three Haikus for Piano Trio / Dmitri Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 8

Beethoven composed his Piano Trio in D Major No. 1, Op. 70, at an important point in his career, when he was beginning to break with the more classical patterns of the time. It is a work of expressive and dynamic contrast with a brilliant luminosity in the first and third movements and an exuberant second movement that has earned it the nickname of the Ghost Trio. The Three Haikus for Piano Trio by Josep Maria Guix are a perfect frontier between the trios of Beethoven and Shostakovich. Inspired by the poems of Issa Kobayashi, the mist becomes the backbone and common thread of the whole. Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 1 in C Minor is a work that reflects his creative youth during a dark and turbulent period. It is a work by a particularly romantic Shostakovich, and explores a language that he gradually grew out of throughout his life. Hèlix Trio was founded in 2022 at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW Basel, where they furthered their training. Last year, Hèlix Trio won the first edition of the La Flama 2023 Prize, awarded by Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya with the collaboration of the Vic International Quartet Academy.
