PROGRAMME

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Symphony Wq. 182/1 in G Major (H. 657) / Symphony Wq. 182/5 in B Minor (H. 661) / Symphony Wq. 182/4 in A Major (H. 660) / Symphony Wq. 182/2 in E Major (H. 662) / Symphony Wq. 182/3 in C Major (H. 669)

With the six Wq. 182 symphonies dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach cemented his reputation as a composer. The second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, eclipsed in life by Händel and once dead, by Haydn and Mozart, continues to be the decisive link between Baroque and Classicism. With these symphonies he opens up even the doors to romanticism in its evolution from a gallant style to a more intimate one, the so-called sensitive style, to which he gave free rein when, after 30 years of writing works for harpsichord at the court of Frederick II of Prussia, he moved to Hamburg to work as a choirmaster in the main churches. With his head full of new ideas, he found in Baron Van Swieten the necessary support to bring them to life in these six symphonies. Amandine Beyer, at the head of Gli Incogniti on her return to the Torroella Festival, will be performing five of them.
