Lakecia Benjamin, saxophone | Oscar Pérez, piano | Elias Bailey, bass | E. J. Strickland, drums
In recent years, the North American saxophone player and composer Lakecia Benjamin has been featured on the covers of the top jazz magazines. The American and British press has praised her talent, shown both in solo recordings and accompanied by well-known artists such as The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Gregory Porter, Santigold, Talib Kweli or Alicia Keys, among others. Drawing inspiration from names such as Wayne Shorter, Erykah Badu or Alice and John Coltrane, she connects modern jazz with funk and R&B, giving a musical backdrop to themes related to civil rights and contemporary social issues. With her fourth and latest album, Phoenix, Lakecia Benjamin reaffirms her position as a committed artist, alongside guest stars of the stature of Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter and the feminist activist Angela Davis. This album has earned her three nominations to the 2024 Grammy awards in the jazz category: the best jazz performance, the best instrumental album, and the best composition for the track Amerikkan skin.
