With Souvenirs in song form, the soprano Aida Gimeno, winner of the Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya Prize for the best performance of a Catalan composer at last year’s Primer Palau cycle, presents a sample of Spanish popular song and mélodie française from the 19th and 20th centuries, when Paris was one of the world’s leading art centres. The concert opens with a presentation of the influence of cabaret on the mélodie française, with works by Francis Poulenc and Henri Duparc. The central part is given over to Mediterranean composers, Joaquín Turina, Frederic Mompou and Antón García Abril, with two jewels from the latter’s vocal production, and the programme closes with Xavier Montsalvatge’s famous Cinco canciones negras.
