In the 18th century, a system of season tickets was used for concerts in London’s most prestigious rooms. One of the most famous series of the second half of the 18th century was the Bach-Abel series. Created by the soprano Teresa Cornelys, it began in 1765 with concerts held in her rooms. Three seasons later, Johann Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel took over management of the cycle, programming concerts in the highly sought-after Hannover Square rooms between 1775 and 1781. Bach and Abel played their works and invited musicians from all over Europe to participate, such as Juan Oliver Astorga, a composer from Murcia, who went to London in 1767 and was an associate and employee of the partnership. As viol and harpsichord players, respectively, Abel and Bach actively took part in the transition from baroque to classicism, and were able to play their repertoire with both baroque instruments (harpsichord or viol) and more modern instruments (fortepiano or cello). This year, the early music quintet Anacronía, chosen best baroque music performer at the 98th (2021) Juventudes Musicales de España Competition in the early music category, has proposed this interesting programme to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Carl Friedrich Abel.
