Felix Mendelssohn: The Hebrides, overture / Juli Garreta: Les illes Medes / Marco Mezquida: Concerto for piano and orchestra "Talaiot"
Born in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Juli Garreta would say that his roots were in the Costa Brava, the prevailing north wind or 'tramontana', and the cork oak groves. "My eyes and soul are sensitive only in this corner of the world," he said. Garreta dedicated the symphonic poem, Les illes Medes, one of the most outstanding examples of modern Catalan music and first performed by the Pau Casals Orchestra on 18 October 1923, to an iconic location on the Costa Brava. On the centenary of its premiere, the Torroella Festival has programmed Juli Garreta's Les illes Medes in L’Estartit, at the Punta del Molinet, facing the Medes Islands, in a sea-themed symphonic programme that will open with Mendelssohn's The Hebrides, inspired by the Scottish coast, and close with Marco Mezquida's Concerto for piano and orchestra "Talaiot", inspired by the prehistoric monuments of the island of Minorca.
