Domènec Terradellas: Giuseppe riconosciuto
Born in Barcelona in 1713, Domènec Terradellas was an outstanding representative of the Neapolitan Opera School who played a major role in the evolution of opera from baroque to classicism. A chapel master in Rome and director of the King's Theatre in London, he developed his career far from his country, where none of his works were performed until three years after his death in Rome, at the age of 38, in mysterious circumstances. The Torroella de Montgrí Festival programmed a work by Terradellas for the first time in 2021, the Te Deum solemne, in the first concert held in Torroella in memory of Ernest Lluch. This year, the 43rd Festival begins with the oratorio Giuseppe riconosciuto, the first work that Terradellas presented in Naples in 1736. It was performed again in 1995, this time with a modern orchestra, as a result of a research project undertaken by the musicologist Josep Dolcet. At Torroella, it will be performed with an ensemble of period instruments.
