Bartók: 44 duos for 2 violins, Sz98
In 1931, Erich Doflein, a violin teacher at the University of Freiburg, commissioned the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók to write a violin duet for inclusion in a teaching method he was in the process of writing. Bartók, who had written piano pieces for teaching purposes, contributed a work (the last in this collection), which Doflein judged very difficult. The composer added more duets, until he reached a total of 45 (no. 36 is double). Lina Tur Bonet, from Ibiza, and the Italian, Enrico Onofri, come together to perform all of these musical miniatures – pieces that are much more than mere exercises for violinists.
