We see four musicians sitting around a table. The oldest, the Czech violinist and trumpeter Gottfried Finger (1660-1730), returns after many years living in London, where he gained some popularity as a composer of operas. An old acquaintance from London, the braggart violinist William Corbett (1675-1748), the second to arrive and on his way to Italy, tries to cheer him up. In his luggage, he carries some manuscripts by a Florentine violinist named Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani (1638-1693). The party is completed by two very young musicians, Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Both aspire to make a living as musicians. Händel carries a violin, an oboe and some sonatas he has written. Bach has some minor compositions, a book by one of his idols, Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643), and an outline of something he wants to turn into a cantata. The room's centrepiece is an organ and, in this programme, you can listen to what might have happened once the four had had enough to drink.
