Mayumi Sargent and Panos Charalampidis, violins | Eura Fortuny, viola | Antigoni Seferli, cello
PuraCorda was formed in early 2020 from the initiative of the Majorcan violinist Mayumi Sargent and the Greek cellist Antigoni Seferli, after having met during their musical studies specialised in historicist interpretation at the Amsterdam Conservatory. The idea of PuraCorda was born from the members' love and devotion for gut strings and all that they can offer. The result is a string quartet dedicated to the historicist interpretation of the repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, a new and exciting territory that very few ensembles have explored with gut strings. Although based in Amsterdam (Holland), all of the members come from Mediterranean countries; half from the Balearic Islands, the other half from Greece.
PuraCorda is particularly interested in unknown repertoire and forgotten composers. In addition, given the lack of interest in the work of women composers in the history of music, they have decided to always include at least one work by a woman in all their programmes. Despite their current consolidation as a string quartet, this group plans to vary its formation so that they can embrace all the chamber music repertoire still to be discovered.
PuraCorda debuted its first programme Northern Gems in June 2021 in Amsterdam, after receiving a grant from Balcon Scenes. They have taken part in the 8th Noches Clásicas de la Tramontana festival (Majorca) and have recently received a grant under the European programme Eeemerging+ 2022.
