Muera cupido. Theatre music tradition in Spain at the turn of the 18th century

Francisco Guerau: Pavana / Attributed to Sebastián Durón and José de Torres: “Yo hermosísima Ninfa” from the zarzuela El imposible mayor en amor le vence Amor / Sebastián Durón: “Quantos teméis al rigor” from the zarzuela Las nuevas armas de Amor / “Sosieguen, descansen” from the zarzuela Salir el amor del mundo / Improvisation: Chácaras and Folias / Giovanni Bononcini: Patorella che tra le selve / Fahmi Alqhai: Marionas and Canarios / José de Nebra: “Adiós, prenda de mi amor” from the opera Amor aumenta el valor / “Tempestad grande, amigo” from the zarzuela Vendado es amor, no es ciego

Before a new royal dynasty, the Bourbon, started to rule Spain in 1700, Spanish music had certain distinctive features that distinguished it from the Italian vogue that dominated a large part of Europe. This concert programme reviews the theatre music tradition in Spain at the turn of the 18th century, when the new court started to introduce the Italian musical style, with the composers Sebastián Durón and José de Nebra, who drove the fusion of Spain’s distinctive musical forms with the Italian style. The recording of this widely praised concert programme won the German Opus Klassik award in 2020 for the best record.
