Joan Cererols: Missa de Batalla / Missa pro Defunctis
A Spanish ship sails down the Amazon for the first time, someone scrolls through a gallery of images looking for a photo, the bottom level of an illegal mine collapses, a new Instagram notification is displayed on a screen, the king of Spain listens dumbfounded to a mass given in his honour, golden dust suspended in droplets, muddy rain, an anatomy teacher looks for the place where the soul is, someone finds the closest restaurant, 56 unread messages, the jungle is on fire, a requiem is being played in a New World cathedral, someone is looking at the sky, someone is watching a series, someone picks up a mineral fragment, someone raises a chalice, someone lifts up a mobile phone. Torroella de Montgrí opens the 2022 Festival with a performance staged by the Agrupación Señor Serrano company. With the title Extinció, it puts live images to two masses by the Martorell composer Joan Cererols (1618-1680): Missa de Batalla and Missa pro Defunctis. Baroque music that the performance anchors in the present and catapults toward the future.
A co-production by the Teatro Real de Madrid and the Teatro de la Abadía with the support of the International Religious Art Festival (FIAS 2022)
