Music for St. Mark’s Square and Basilica, Venice
In the early 17th century, St. Mark’s Basilica and the magnificent square in which it is situated were the venue for most of the ceremonies held in Venice. There would always be music performed by members of the Basilica’s musical chapel, who were also employed by the Doge himself for his personal chapel. Monteverdi was director as from 1613 and would have taken charge of some of the works that feature in this programme, which begins with the famous opening Toccata of his opera, L'Orfeo.
