At the beginning of the 17th century, Venice was renowned as a centre of culture where music was considered a necessary display of wealth in the city’s noble palaces. Monteverdi arrived there in 1613 to direct the musical chapel of the Basilica of Saint Mark. His music, like that of his contemporaries, some of whom were members of the musical chapel he directed, formed part of the entertainment organised for the nobles’ celebrations. This concert offers a selection of these works, including some pieces dedicated to Monteverdi himself.
