About this event

Vespers is one of the services of the liturgical day, equivalent to evening prayer. Monteverdi’s Vespers, albeit inspired by the religious service, transcend their origin and exemplify the transition from austere Renaissance polyphony to the splendour of the baroque. A bold innovation in this sacred work is the composer’s use of an almost operatic musical language, including a number of instrumental dances and even a love song.
