Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988
The Goldbergs are an outstanding example of the musical genre of variation, one of the primordial forms of music based on repetition, a method which makes the score recognisable and comprehensible to the human ear. According to Bach’s first biographer, the work was composed so that Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, one of the composer’s best students, could perform the variations during the sleepless nights of Count Hermann-Karl von Keyserling. Benjamin Alard, despite his youth, is a great specialist in Bach, and one of the most talented harpsichordists active today, an established performer of these variations.
