The saxophone, an instrument now almost always associated with the world of jazz, was invented in 1840 by the Belgian, Adophe Sax. It was originally conceived as an orchestral instrument, but did not gain popularity in this medium. It became important in military music in the second half of the 19th century, when the saxophone quartet came into existence, an ensemble whose singular, attractive sound won over the new generations of musicians. Kebyart Ensemble is a saxophone quartet formed in 2014 at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya with the aim of exploring the music composed for this group of instruments. The group’s concerts also include transcriptions of works written for other types of ensemble.
