The Salve Regina is the best-known of all hymns to the Virgin Mary and forms the basis of this programme performed by Antonio Florio and his ensemble Cappella Neapolitana, known until recently as the Cappella Della Pietà de’ Turchini. Florio has made a selection of some of the most beautiful Marian hymns of the baroque period from three Italian cities – Rome, Naples and Venice. All of these works are spectacular cantatas composed in a highly ornamented operatic style.
