Poulenc: Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano, Op. 43 / Beethoven: Quintet in E flat major for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, Op. 16 / Mozart: Quintet in E flat major for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, K. 452
Mozart’s quintet for piano and wind instruments received its first performance in 1784 and for some time the composer was convinced that it was the best of his works. It is, indeed, a masterwork, and an admiring Beethoven used it as a model for his own quintet for the same instrumental forces, composed in 1796. Even the key signature of E flat major is the same. The Lucerne Festival Winds with Enrique Bagaría on piano bring together both these quintets in a chamber music concert of great beauty.
