Ascension Cantatas
J. S. Bach: Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen, Cantata BWV 43 / Wer da gläubet und getauft wird, Cantata BWV 37 / Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen, Cantata BWV 11
Bach composed some 200 religious cantatas during the 27 years that he was cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, The cantatas were designed to be performed on Sundays and on special church occasions, and fall into groups according to the date in the church calendar for which they were composed. The three that figure in today’s concert, which features the Acadèmia 1750 (the Torroella Festival orchestra) and the Chamber Choir from Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana, were written for the feast of the Ascension. BWV 11, “Praise God in his kingdoms” can be considered almost as an oratorio, as it is a large-scale work, and, unlike the other two, explains the details of Jesus’ ascension to Heaven.
