The Mackworth Manuscript of Spanish cantatas: José de Torres: Antoni Martí i Coll: Canarios / Folía, for baroque guitar and double harp / Antoni Literes: Déjame, ingrata, for soprano and accompaniment / Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde: Susana Passegiatta for viola da gamba and bass continuo / José de Torres: ¿Quién podrá?, for soprano, violin and harp / En mi pecho clausurados, for soprano and accompaniment / Sobre las Ondas azules for soprano and accompaniment / Diego Fernández Huete: Canción alemana
The Mackworth Manuscript, preserved at the University of Cardiff, is a splendid collection of 18 Spanish cantatas from the beginning of the 18th. Century. For years the manuscript was in the keeping of the family of Welsh landowner and politician, Herbert Mackworth. There are 12 cantatas by the Madrid composer, José de Torres, but also two works by the Majorcan, Antoni Lliteres and the Catalan, Pere Rabassa. In this concert by the Acadèmia 1750, we will come to experience the beauty of these works – courtly music which remained forgotten for years on the wooden shelves of the stately home of an aristocratic British family.
