I. Albéniz: Iberia
Iberia is not only the most important composition for the piano in Spanish music; it is also one of the greatest piano works of the 20th century. Both Debussy and Messiaen shared this opinion, the latter saying “It is a marvel of piano playing, and has a place – perhaps pride of place – amongst the brightest stars of what is par excellence the king of instruments”. The work was composed between 1905 and 1909, and consists of four books, each containing three pieces. The excellent recording of Iberia made by Luis Fernando Pérez for the Verso label led to the pianist being awarded the Albéniz Medal in 2008.
