Two young Catalan quartets, the Qvixote and the Gerhard, join forces to perform a masterwork of great originality, the String Octet by Mendelssohn, a piece which established the identity of a new genre in chamber music, moving beyond the earlier practice of treating double quartets as mirror images, in which the score becomes like a symphony in miniature.
