Zemlinsky Quartet | Josep Colom, piano
L.V. Beethoven: String Quartet no. 6 in B flat major, op. 18 n. 6/ E.Toldrà: Vistes al mar / R. Schumann: Quintet for piano and strings in E flat major, op. 44
The concert begins with the last numbered of the six quartets Beethoven composed to a commission from Prince Lobkowitz. The work follows the string quartet format established by Haydn and Mozart, although it incorporates a wider range of musical language, including a dialogue of great beauty between violin and cello. Vistes al mar, by Eduard Toldrà, was first performed at the Palau de la Música, Barcelona in 1921, and is inspired by three poems by Joan Maragall. The composer enchants us with a rondo, and nature and the sea are a constant thematic background. In his Piano Quintet, Schumann brings out the spectacular expressive quality and the variety of textures that can be achieved by this type of ensemble.
