J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (string trio version by Dmitri Sitkovetsky)
Few works for harpsichord have achieved the popularity and mythical reputation of the Goldberg Variations of J.S. Bach. The history of these variations, according to Bach's biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, began with a commission from Count Hermann Carl von Keyserling in Dresden for music for his court harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to play during his master's nights of insomnia, and 20th century performances have included those of the mythical Canadian pianist, Glenn Gould. This year's Festival performance will be of similar stature. The Capuçon brothers will join the viola player Gerard Caussé, to perform the arrangement for string trio made by the violinist Dmitri Sitkovetsky in 1984.
