The conductor and harpsichordist Stefano Demicheli was born in Turin and is musical director of the Acadèmia 1750. Tonight he conducts a programme of European vocal and instrumental music from the first third of the eighteenth century. The works of Fasch (Germany) and Rebel (France) will bring to us music that was held in high regard and exercised great influence at the time of its composition. These pieces will serve as an introduction for the Stabat Mater, one of the culminating points in Western musical history, composed by Pergolesi during the last year of his life. The melodic beauty of this music is representative of the transition between the baroque and pre-classical periods, with features that could even be considered precursors of Romanticism, especially in the sections written in minor keys.
