J.S. Bach: Cantata Jesu, der du meine Seele, BWV 78 / Cantata Ich habe genug, BWV 82 / Cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140
A concert consisting of three of Bach's best-known cantatas will be the starting point for both this years' Festival and the ambitious “Bach Project 2010-2021”, a macro-production by the Acadèmia 1750 which over the next 11 years will bring us performances of the entire output of religious cantatas by the composer who came to be called the “Homer of music”. Bach's cantatas have been described as an “eternal cathedral”, so we can imagine this concert to be a small archway initiating construction of the magnum opus of the Period Orchestra of our Festival. This initial archway, with three cantatas from Bach's years as Cantor and Musical Director at the church of St. Thomas, Leipzig, will be apt demonstration of the masterly way in which the composer brings across the theological message contained in his religious music. Not for nothing has Bach been referred to as the fifth evangelist.
