H.I.F. Biber: Rosary Sonatas and Harmonie Artificiosa
The Rosary Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz von Biber (1644-1704) are among the greatest works for violin of the baroque period, and constitute one of the culminating points of all violin repertoire. The ensemble Movimento Arioso, formed by musicians from the Acadèmia 1750, will perform a brief selection of these sonatas, together with other works from the Harmonie Artificiosa, another important collection by the same composer. Although not strictly programme music, the Rosary Sonatas are imbued with musical symbolism, which together with the use of scordatura (changes in the tuning of the violin) gives the work a unique character in Western instrumental music.
