PROGRAMME

L.V. Beethoven: Great Fugue, Op. 113 / B. CasablancasQuartet nº3* / B. Bartók: Quartet nº3, Sz 85 / M. Ravel: Quartet

The composer Benet Casablancas is one of a number of contemporary composers who have gained recognition outside their home country. In recent years, his compositions have shown great concern for the expressive capabilities of music – something we can clearly appreciate in this first performance of his quartet. The concert also includes works of the importance of Beethoven's Grosse Fuge, composed in 1825 and originally intended to be the last movement of his quartet Op. 130, and Bartók's third quartet which is based on the composer's “micromelodies”, looking forward to the compositions of Ligeti. The final work is the quartet dedicated by Ravel in 1904 to his teacher, Fauré.
