L.V. Beethoven: Missa Solemnis for soloists, chorus and orchestra, op. 123

Beethoven considered that the aim of a work of the dimensions of the Missa Solemnis was to give musical expression to universal truths such as the immensity of God or the mystery of the Incarnation. In composing the mass, he was fulfilling an ambition to write music that would do full justice to the religious text. The composer's humble sincerity is expressed in the inscription he placed at the head of the manuscript – “From the heart to the heart.” It is a masterwork considered to be one of the pinnacles of religious music of all periods
