Cristina Branco has been a decisive influence in developing new versions of the traditional Portuguese fado. Her artistic career began with folk music, blues and bossanova, but she came into contact with the world of the fado thanks to the influence of Amalia Rodrigues. Branco's style avoids the dramatic character of many fado performances, and her concerts have been praised for bringing together the warmth of pop songs and the emotional quality inherent in the fado tradition, thereby adding a degree of sensuality never heard before in this kind of music.
